How to Give Visitors an Authentic Austin Experience

Summer is the perfect time to travel, so it should come as no surprise when your friends and family call to tell you that they’re headed your way and can’t wait for you to show off all the things you love about the city. There’s no doubt that the panic will set in and you’ll immediately blank on all of the amazing spots and activities you can enjoy with your loved ones. We’ve put together a guide to get you brainstorming on what to do and where to go, so you won’t have to worry about leaving anything out the next time a guest ends up on your doorstep.

Now, taking a tour may sound cliche, but when there’s so much to explore and so much history in one place, it pays off to take in the sights of the city and learn some interesting facts along the way. Classic walking tours are available as well as segway tours. You can even join in the Austin Live Music Crawl with Austin Detours. You’re led by a local musician who will take you off the beaten path so you can discover hidden music venues and locations.

Feasting on food truck cuisine is a must when you’re in the city. It’s remarkable to see a shwarma restaurant, pizza place, and taco joint all within walking distance of each other and serving some of the best food you’ll ever taste.

Beer gardens and breweries are another specialty in Austin. It’d be a shame to visit without sampling a flight and chatting with the locals that take southern hospitality seriously. If beer isn’t your thing, check out some of the local coffee shops we have around town, and make sure you keep an eye out for all the murals we’ve got around town. They make the perfect photo back and are always a conversation starter among Austinites.

If you’re hoping to do some shopping, head to South Congress Avenue. There you’ll find one-of-a-kind stores and chic boutiques. Fun and funky is the vibe on this side of town, and you’ll get a taste of what it really means to “keep Austin weird.”

As the Live Music Capital of the World, we take our music venues seriously, and you’re sure to hear a variety of crooners, rockstars, and karaoke queens leaving it all out on the stage at every bar you pass. Pop into any venue, listen, dance, and let the lyrics and beat take you away.

The most important thing to remember is that Austin is a unique city and wherever you go, it’s sure to be an adventure. If you’re not big on itineraries, let yourself get lost, absorb the city, and you’ll feel like an Austin local in no time.

If you have any friends or family that are looking to move to Austin after they visited, I’d be happy to help them find a home that’s close to all the places they fell in love with.
