Give Back in the Greater Austin area this Thanksgiving

The deeper we dive into the fall season, the closer we get to Thanksgiving. As the Thanksgiving holiday is all about being thankful for those you have in your life and giving back to the community, I’ve compiled a list of things you can do to get in the true spirit of the holiday:

Deliver meals to people in need
Do you enjoy driving around? If so, consider delivering Thanksgiving meals to those in need. Reach out to your local branch of Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army or hospice organization - they can always use a helping hand during the holidays.

Run in a Turkey Trot
Are you searching for a way to give back to the community while burning some calories before the big Thanksgiving feast? We've got just the thing for you - the annual Turkey Trot, benefitting local charities! The Austin area Turkey Trot takes place Thanksgiving morning, November 23, at the Long Center. Each race starts at different times - here are the details:

Kids K - 8:45 a.m.
Timed 5 Mile - 9:30 a.m.
Untimed 5 Mile - 9:35 a.m.
1 Mile Walk/Run - 9:50 a.m.

Get out and burn some calories - your waistline will thank you at the end of the day!

Serve dinner at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter If you love people, get out and interact with them at the local soup kitchens or homeless shelters. Not only do they need people to serve, but they also need volunteers to cook, collect food, set the tables, clean up afterward and more. To find a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter, call your local Salvation Army, visit VolunteerMatch or check out your local Craigslist or churches.

Send care packages to troops
Don't forget to give thanks to those that selflessly protect our country! This year, if you don't have time to go out and volunteer, consider sending a care package to our troops overseas. Don't know what to send? Here are seven affordable ideas for military care packages. Or, donate to Homefront America's 'Giving Thanks to Heroes' program - an initiative providing Turkey Certificates to military families to go shopping for their Thanksgiving dinner!

Donate to your local Food Bank
Giving back can be as simple as donating food to your local Food Bank. The Central Texas Food Bank is always looking for food donations and volunteers to help nearly 46,000 Central Texans get the food they otherwise couldn't afford.

Visit local residents in need
Sometimes, all people need is a little company. To give back this year, consider visiting local residents in retirement communities, assisted living communities and hospice. The joy you bring them through just a little social interaction will warm up your heart and theirs!

Help your own family
Do you usually sit on the sidelines, watching the game, while others are shopping, cooking and cleaning? Instead of your usual routine, consider switching things up! Help your family shop for the ingredients or help with the cooking or cleaning!

Giving back is a great way to say “thanks” to the community you LOVE!
