How to Pick the Right Real Estate Agent For You

Deciding which real estate agent to represent you can be one of the most important decisions for an individual throughout the entire real estate process. The right decision can make the journey effortless and enjoyable while the wrong decision can make the process tiresome and never-ending. For those just beginning the real estate journey, it can be hard to decide whether an agent is the right or wrong fit for you. Here are four tips to help you pick the right real estate agent for you:

  1. Think Local – Do you have a neighborhood or region of the city you want to live in? Using an agent that is local to the area provides you with the ultimate advantage. At times, these agents are privy to insider information about the local real estate landscape. Take any advantage you can!
  2. Resources – During the interview, ask your potential Realtor® what resources and connections they have in the area. These resources can be useful both during the home search process (other real estate agents and brokers in the area) or after you have purchased a home (contractors, handymen, etc.).
  3. Open Communication – You don't want to have to badger your Realtor® for updates every step of the process. Before signing the paperwork, ask the potential Realtor® for a list of references. Contact these past clients to determine if they ever had communication issues during their real estate process. If there were problems with past clients, chances are they will be there during your process as well.
  4. Their History – Always ask for a list of references, and make sure to follow up with those references. In addition, state boards license and discipline real estate agents. Check and see if your potential agent has been disciplined and why they were disciplined. It’s good to have all the facts upfront!

Remember, choosing the right real estate agent can make the real estate process effortless and enjoyable for you. So, don’t skip any steps – make a set of questions and take them to the agent presentation. Here are five questions you should consider asking in the interview:

  1. What geographic areas and property types do you handle?
  2. What resources do you have in the area I am looking in?
  3. How will you communicate with me?
  4. How long have you worked in real estate?
  5. Can you give me a list of references?

Before signing the agreement paperwork, make sure the agent to client relationship feels right to you!

Do you have any questions about how to pick the right real estate agent for you? I have a lot of experience and would love to answer any questions you may have!
