Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Fall is finally here! It really is one of the most wonderful times of the year – with the leaves changing colors, the temperature finally cooling down, and football! What could be better? But, with fall soon comes winter…and as homeowners it is important to take care of your home and schedule some much needed maintenance before fall turns into winter. Here is a fall home maintenance checklist for you to use to get your home ready for the upcoming winter months:
While all of these items are important to address before the beginning of winter, there are a few that standout as MUST DO items on the checklist. Here are some you should definitely consider checking to make sure no repairs are needed:
Check your roof and consider replacing any missing or damaged shingles. Missing shingles can cause water damage to your home. It’s better to discover problems now rather than in the dead of winter.
Make sure to clean out your gutters at least once a year — a build-up of leaves can lead to a drainage problem that can affect your roof.
Windows and Doors
Seal any cracks or gaps in your doors and windows. Adding weather-stripping and caulk can help with insulation during the winter months.
Over time, sediment builds up at the bottom of your water heater. Consider flushing the system before the start of winter to prevent repairs in the future.
Consider changing out the filter. You don’t want your furnace to need repairs when it is freezing cold outside.
With winter around the corner, the fireplace will start to get some use again! Check your fireplace for soot or creosote build-up and consider cleaning it out. Also, look for blockages and check to make sure the damper is in working condition.
Of course, it is important to do yearly maintenance on all of these items to prevent major repairs and expenses. The six above are just the major ones I would focus on before the winter months begin!
I hope everyone has a fantastic and festive fall season!
