Simple DIY Tips to Increase Your Home's Value

Our home is often our largest asset, and there are so many simple ways to increase your home’s value. Whether you’re staying or selling, I’ve got you covered with creative ideas to make the most of your home improvement dollar as it relates to your home’s value.  Let’s take a look:

  • Repaint your front door. It sets the tone for your porch and is often one of the first things visitors notice. Make it pop! My favorite colors: crimson or slate blue.
  • Paint kitchen cabinets. Adding new cabinetry is expensive, but a few coats of fresh paint can make an outdated kitchen look much more modern. Check out Rust-Oleum’s Cabinet Transformations Kit.
  • Update cabinet handles and pulls. This inexpensive weekend project can make your cabinets shine.
  • Install new outlets and switch plates. Easy, cheap (think less than $1 each) and high-impact.
  • Get rid of the popcorn ceiling. It can be messy, but it’s well-worth the effort. Before you embark on this DIY project, make sure you don’t have asbestos popcorn.
  • Upgrade your fixtures - think faucets, door knobs and locks. Don’t want to shell out the money for new fixtures? Painting them is an effective and budget-friendly solution. Check out Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover paint.
  • Swap out your lighting. Upgraded lighting in the main rooms of your home changes the entire dynamic of the living spaces.
  • Opt for neutral paint colors. Timeless shades are always in style.
  • Update your window frames. Called “trimming a window,” this improvement makes windows larger by adding molding and a new apron.
  • Add mirrors. Believe it or not, mirrors are the simplest way to make any space feel larger and brighter.
  • If you want to seriously invest in improvements, consider starting in the kitchen. Kitchen upgrades (like new appliances and countertops) will usually give the biggest return on your investment. However, don’t overlook important functioning systems like heating, cooling and plumbing in the quest for a shiny kitchen.
